Supporting the Station

Lake Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories is the University of Minnesota’s premier field station.  A vast natural laboratory at the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Itasca is the place where hands on learning has inspired generations of students to pursue their love of biology.  Studying at Itasca has become the experience of a lifetime for biologists at the University of Minnesota.  All incoming freshman participate in Nature of Life at the station the summer before their freshman year.

Facilities at Itasca are deteriorating so rapidly that some buildings will not be usable this upcoming summer season.  With dwindling state support, the College of Biological Sciences is unable to upgrade the facilities to meet the changing needs of students and faculty.  Our priorities are to:

  1. Rebuild historic Cabin #4 for field biology and laboratory faculty and visiting scientists (fund #7575).

  2. To support a new campus plan that calls for the restoration of some classrooms and labs and the construction of new facilities including housing (fund #6318).

We need your help!  Making a tax-deductible donation is easy.  Make an online gift at http://www.giving.umn.edu/giving_opps/ (be sure to specify the fund number of the project you are interested in supporting).  You may also print out this pledge form and return it to the address listed on the bottom of the form.
