CONNECTEDNESS
The M.B.S. program is the first component of a larger
University wide program called BioLink. The BioLink
initiative is intended to make the extensive resources in the biological
sciences at the University of Minnesota more readily available to
the community. Communication between the community at large and
biological resources at the University will be facilitated at BioLink
via phone contact, email, fax transmission and Internet access to
relevant University Web pages. Program components will eventually
include Web-based courses, on-site short courses, access to expertise
and specialized technologies, as well as degree and certificate
programs.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
How To Apply - Web application information
is available online at the
Graduate School Web-based application website.
When applying to the M.B.S. program through the Graduate School,
you should choose "011837908; Biological Science; M Bio Sci" on
the application form. All U.S. applicants and permanent residents
must pay an application fee of $55 to the Graduate School. The application
fee is $75 for international applicants.
When to Apply - Applications are accepted for
any term. It takes several weeks to process an application once
the Graduate School has received all required materials.
Applications will be accepted after the deadlines,
and if time allows, students may be admitted to the upcoming term
pending program approval.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission requirements include:
- a bachelor's degree or a comparable foreign degree from an
accredited college or university
- a minimum of 2 years experience in the work force
- 3 letters of reference
- a statement of career goals (include in your personal statement in the online application)
- undergraduate and postbaccalaureate transcripts from all
colleges attended.
All information requested on the Graduate School application form including transcripts should be sent directly to the Graduate School.
Three Letters of reference should be
sent to BioLink. We do not require the use of the online recommendation form included in the online application.
In exceptional circumstances, promising applicants with less experience
may be considered.
Because of the nature of the clientele served, factors
related to maturity and job experience will also be considered in
the admissions process. Standardized test scores are not required
and will not be considered if submitted. A personal or phone interview
is recommended for all candidates. No single factor will determine
acceptance.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Upon acceptance into the program, the credentials
of each student are evaluated against the needs of the student.
A program of study is then designed according to the student's interests,
undergraduate major, and length and type of work in the field; a
graduate faculty advisor is assigned to the student based on the
student's area of interest. Upon successful completion of 10 semester
credits, each student is required to declare an area of concentration
and plan the rest of his or her curriculum in consultation with
the faculty advisor.
Admitted students may be required to take (or audit)
the lecture portion (only) of a biology refresher course (Biol 1009)
or pass a qualifying exam before beginning graduate studies. No
credit is awarded toward the M.B.S. degree for Biol 1009. Both day
and evening sections of this course are offered. If more than 10
years have passed since completion of an undergraduate degree in
a biological science, the qualifying exam must be taken unless the
student elects to audit Biol 1009. However, if the student has worked
substantially in a biological field within the past 5 years,
then neither the course nor the exam are required. This decision
will be made by the program Advisory Committee. If a student enters
the program with no college biology, then either Biol 1009 or the
qualifying exam will be required.
While candidates with undergraduate preparation in
disciplines other than a biological science may be admitted, it
may be necessary for that candidate to take additional course work
to compensate for specific deficiencies in knowledge. These courses
can not be used to meet the M.B.S. degree requirements, but will
appear on your transcript and are included in the calculation of
the cumulative Graduate school grade point average.
The program requires completion of 30 semester credits
at the 4xxx level or higher (15 semester credits must be 5xxx or
higher), including
- 12 core semester credits (biochemistry, genetics, cell biology
& ecology)
- 9 semester concentration credits
- 7 semester elective credits (a choice from technical communication,
education, and management courses-or additional course work
in biology)
- 2 semester capstone project credits.
M.B.S. candidates may transfer up to 10 graduate-level semester
credits into the program. Core credits may be waived or substituted
if the student can show proficiency in the subject area, pending
Advisory Committee approval. If waived, the credit requirement will
be earned in an elective course. Course work will be taken from
the regular curriculum in the participating colleges, as well as
from other approved credit-bearing courses (e.g., intensive short
courses and Internet courses). The overall program GPA of a candidate
must be a minimum of 3.00 for the degree to be awarded.
All degree candidates will submit a capstone project
worth 2 semester credits toward the degree. The capstone project
may be a research paper, a laboratory project, or a practicum. For
example, an M.B.S. student in environmental studies might draft
an environmental impact statement for a local firm. K-12 teachers
might spend a period of time in a faculty laboratory with a directed
project. The capstone project may also be derived from the employment
of the student.
